VSB LENDS A HELPING HAND

After consulting with the FOLS and the CLO, the VSB has decided to lend a helping hand to the protestors with financial commitments who will receive little or no salaries this month from the government. Teachers and civil workers are advised to register and to give the names of the businesses they are committed to so that the VSB could work on it. The VSB in the meanwhile has conferred with its members and other institutions to be lenient this month with the protestors who cannot carry out their commitments due to the governments policy of no work no pay. It is understood that some members will receive half of their salaries since it is dificult to determine who was on the job or not and even though they were present, for how long? Robby Naarendorp, Chairman of the FOLS has called upon all teachers to join in the general strike that is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, when all businesses are expected to close and Paramaribo will look like a ghost city. Even though the government is giving their best effort to try and break the actions of the workers it seems to have little effect because the register list continues to grow daily, where about a week ago there were only 2500 registered today it is reported that the number has increased to 3015.

PRESIDENT WIJDENBOSCH PROMISES BETTER COMMUNICATION WITH THE PEOPLE

During his visit to the Brokopondo district, the President promised that there will be better communication between the government and the people. He did this after the Advisor of State Desi Bouterse pointed out that there should be better communications with the people so that they should know what was taking place. These promises were made at the official opening of the 96 km long rehabilitated road that connects Berg en dal-Brownsberg-Pokigron/Atjoni. A new road to Doe Watra was also opened. Seven wooden bridges have been replaced with concrete ones, and at Atjoni a modern service station was opened that will supply the 52 villages of 35000 inhabitants with gasoline and other oil products. With the opening of the new road it will be easier for the villagers to come to Paramaribo by road instead of over the falls by boats.
