SURINAME DOES NOT NEED CUBAN DOCTORS

President Jules Wijdenbosch's announcement that 52 Cuban doctors will soon be coming to work in Suriname came as an unwelcome surprise to members of the medical Institute at the University of Suriname. Expecially since there is no need for more doctors but more teachers. After the President's announcement was made the Dean of the University along with members of the Board of directors and the Student's Commision held a meeting in which they voiced their disapproval with what they call a solo-action on the part of the President. They were however pleased to learn that 3 Cuban teachers in physiology, physiotherapy and phamacology will also be coming to work in Suriname.

OLD PARAMARIBO SEEKS PLACE ON WORLD'S HERITAGE LIST

At the local governments request at the WORLD'S HERITAGE COMMISSION to place Suriname on the World's Heritage List, the ICOMOS is sending down Estaban Prieto on a three days visit to our country. Prieto, who is an architect and expert on historical momuments will visit all historical buildings in the centrum of Paramaribo and his decission will determine whether or not Old-Paramaribo can be placed on the World's list. A place on the list would mean that Suriname would no longer have to seek funds elsewhere to upkeep the historical buildings and at the same time have a positive effect on the culture-tourism of Paramaribo. This was reeported by the SGES.

DISTRICT HOSPITAL WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT LOWER TARIFF

The Nickerie district hospital has reported that they will no longer accept the lower tariffs for treatment and laying costs. They cannot compete with the Academic hospital in Paramaribo because they do not have the same facilities and the money they receive from the government is nothing compared to the reality of the costs. The Manager of the Nickerie hospital Lita Oemraw has reported that the government has given them another tariff that she hopes will be corrected again in the near future. She said that she was pleased with the governments intension of making the hospitals independant so that they could control and put their income to better use.
