The District Commissioner of Paramaribo, Carlos Visser , has informed the VSB by letter of
his displeasure of the march organized by VSB, the leading Opposition parties
and the Labor Unions to protest against the undermining of the constitution that is scheduled to
take place today. The D.C declared that he will not give permission to hold such a
demonstration and advised the VSB to call off the march. The D.C justified his action by stating
that the organizers have not asked for a license to hold such a demonstration and that without
a given permission they would be acting against the law. The D.C pointed out that the protest
demonstration is likely to cause a disturbance of the law and order of society. The D.C further
stated that even though the VSB has not received permission for his demonstration they are
summoned by this letter to call it off.The VSB's reaction to this was to point out that the D.C
kept referring to a protest demonstration that was to take place but the VSB is organizing a
protest march and needs no permission for this. In the meanwhile the ASFA and the FOLS have
joined forces with the rest of the group and will participate in the march today. The schools
will close at 10 am allowing the teachers to join in this march.
The lagal advisor, Erwin Kanhai who is representing Martosemito in the case against the state
for the sum of SF820 million has reached an agreement with the Ministry of Finance to pay his
client SF60 million to lift the levy on the furnishing of some of Governments property. The
State was fined for ignoring the Judges request to free Martosemito a sum that was allowed to
mount up to the ridiculous amount of SF820 million. When the State refused to pay the fine levy
was made on the furnishings of the National Assembly. Mr Baarh, legal advisor to the
governemnt has denied any knowledge of this agreement stating that he had not seen any papers
from the Public Prosecutor's Office. Another contradicting fact is that a leading advisor ofthe
Ministry of Finance has stated that the money has already been paid. Baarh had argued that the
State was in financial problems and had suggested SF10 Million. In any case th matter goes
before the Judge tomorrow and it will then be revealed what kind of agreement was made
between the State and Martosemito , in what can well be discribed as the Case of Judicial
Neglect.
After President Wijdenbosch's visit to the Memre Buku Camp last week, where he advised the
members of the upcoming loan increases of 100 percent that was to be paid out this month, he
left a happy camp behind. Now one week later, the majority of the members have been
disappointed upon receiving their pay-slip, for both computers and calculators alike could only
come up with an 88 percent increase. The men beleive that the Government should have
worked in a regressive way when calculating the increases.
By bringing in palm oil experts from Malaysia, the Wijdenbosch's Government hopes to pump
life into the palm oil sector of local consumption, while at the same time creating jobs and
saving foreign currency. Malaysia, the worlds largest producer of palm oil with 67 percent of
the world's export for this product has an institute that studies the usage, improvement and
development of palmoil and palmoil products. Malaysian experts have visited Phedra, Victoria
and Patamacca . They see Patamacca as the most suitable site for the cultivation of the palms.
A total of 150.000 ha have been reserved at Patamacca while 400.000 ha have been reserved
at Apoera for this project. The minister of LVV stated that to cultivate 600.000 ha of ground
you'll need 100.000 workers and with a small population as ours the excess production will
have to be exported. Markets will have to be found for this, maybe within the Caricom.
