The last 12
months has been turbulent months for the State Oil Company. Beside the
opening of a refinery and a substantial increase in production, several
attempts were made by the Government to sell the company to foreign investors.
The manner in which one tried to achieve this goal led to mass protests
from the Surinamese Community, Labor Unions, The Suriname Trade and Industry
Association, State Oil personell, staff and managment as a whole.
The dismissal of theDirector of State Oil Company, led
to massive spontaneous demonstrations led by the Combined Labor Unions,
Employers Organizations and the Combined Opposition. The combined opposition,
representing 25 of the 51 seats in parliament also presented a proclamation
to the government, embassies from foreign countries, that as soon as they
regained power in government they would annul all deals made without the
consent of the State Oil Company managment.
A strike which lasted one month, ended with the verdict
of the court which annuled the dismissal of the Director Dr. S. E. Jharap.
The Governments effords, however, to enforce a poor deal upon State Oil
are continued.
